On Monday night, for the first time, we fielded a team in which all players were juniors. Elliot, on board 4, managed to draw, while Hugo played a swashbuckling kingside pawn storm culminating in a wild sacrificial attack. Ibrahim and Cinar also pushed their opponents all the way but at the end of a long evening the games slipped away. These players are advancing at such a rate that I fully expect them to snapping at the heels of the A team players (who already include three talented juniors!) by the beginning of next season! I’ll be very interested to see how our juniors get on in the 4th Portishead Junior Rapidplay in May!
On Tuesday night, by way of contrast we played an all adult team, away to Clifton. It was a night of firsts also. Matt played his first game of the club; Fisker, playing a sharp Morra Gambit, recorded his first win for the club; Al played his first game for the club with the black pieces and secured a draw playing the Czech Defence. Santosh drew, not for the first time, with his favoured London System. So 2-2, with every indication that it’s not just the youngsters who are getting better!
